Where high school NIL stands in Kansas.
Kansas allows high school athletes to monetize NIL under KSHSAA Rule 21, but national trackers describe the allowance as limited. The key restriction is identity: an athlete may not identify himself or herself in connection with the school in any commercial activity.
In practice that means an athlete can be paid as an individual, but any content that names the school, shows the uniform, or trades on the athlete's status as a member of a KSHSAA team crosses the line. Kansas has no college NIL statute, so the KSHSAA rule is the only state-level NIL rule in Kansas.
Effective: 2021 policy.
What a high school athlete can and can't do.
Allowed
- ✓Endorsements, sponsorships, and paid content as an individual, with no school identification
- ✓Appearances, autographs, camps, and merchandise in the athlete's own name
Not allowed
- ×Identifying with the school in any commercial activity: no school name, uniform, logo, or team reference
- ×Compensation tied to athletic performance or offered as an enrollment inducement
- ×Deals arranged through the school
The high school checklist.
- →Read KSHSAA Rule 21 and confirm the current interpretation with the association; the allowance is narrower than in most states
- →Remove every school identifier from content and captions
- →Confirm your school's disclosure expectations

College NIL in Kansas.
Kansas has no college NIL law. House Bill 2264 would have permitted NIL compensation but died in the Kansas Senate on May 23, 2022. Athletes at Kansas, Kansas State, and Wichita State operate under NCAA rules, the House settlement, and school policy.
Since July 2025, Kansas schools that opted into the House settlement may pay athletes directly within the revenue-sharing cap.
Effective: NCAA rules, the House settlement, and school policy govern.
Kansas law: key points
- ✓No state NIL statute; HB 2264 died in the Senate in May 2022
- ✓Direct school payments permitted under the House settlement for opted-in schools
- ✓NIL Go reporting applies to third-party deals of $600 or more
- ✓Agents must comply with Kansas's athlete agent law
National framework (House settlement)
Since July 1, 2025, college NIL runs on two tracks. Third-party deals with brands and businesses remain open, and the House v. NCAA settlement now lets Division I schools that opted in pay athletes directly, capped at roughly $20.5 million per school in the first year and rising annually. State law sits on top of that framework and can add rules, but cannot take the federal settlement terms away.
- →Third-party NIL deals of $600 or more must be reported through the NIL Go clearinghouse, generally within five business days, and are reviewed for fair market value
- →Direct payments from a school count against that school's revenue-sharing cap; third-party deals do not
- →The College Sports Commission handles enforcement tied to settlement rules; the NCAA still governs eligibility
- →Every school also has its own NIL policy on disclosure, prohibited categories, and use of school marks, and it applies alongside state law
- →Federal NIL legislation has been proposed repeatedly and remains unresolved

What this means for a Kansas athlete.
Kansas City and Wichita give Kansas athletes real local markets, and basketball in particular travels well. The KSHSAA rule is workable if you treat it as a total ban on school identification.
MSG builds Kansas deals around the athlete's name only, with nothing that could be read as connecting the deal to the school.
