High school

Where high school NIL stands in Nevada.

Nevada allowed limited high school NIL in April 2023, when the NIAA approved language permitting certain NIL activities for student-athletes. The NIAA's rules are unusual in that they are adopted as state administrative regulations under NAC Chapter 385B, so changes move through the state's regulatory process.

The permitted activities follow the common separation model: NIL must stay apart from the school, its teams, and the NIAA, with no school uniforms, marks, or facilities, no involvement by school staff, and no compensation tied to performance or enrollment. Because the NIAA describes the allowance as limited, families should confirm the current regulation text before signing.

Effective: April 2023.

College

College NIL in Nevada.

Nevada's college NIL law, AB 254, took effect January 1, 2022. It allows athletes at UNLV, Nevada, and other schools to earn NIL compensation and bars institutions from penalizing them for it, within the NCAA framework.

Since July 2025, Nevada schools that opted into the House settlement may pay athletes directly within the revenue-sharing cap, and third-party deals of $600 or more are reported through NIL Go.

Effective: Effective January 1, 2022.

Nevada law: key points

  • ✓NIL compensation permitted since January 1, 2022 under AB 254
  • ✓Direct school payments permitted under the House settlement for opted-in schools
  • ✓NIL Go reporting applies to third-party deals of $600 or more
  • ✓Agents must comply with Nevada's athlete agent law

National framework (House settlement)

Since July 1, 2025, college NIL runs on two tracks. Third-party deals with brands and businesses remain open, and the House v. NCAA settlement now lets Division I schools that opted in pay athletes directly, capped at roughly $20.5 million per school in the first year and rising annually. State law sits on top of that framework and can add rules, but cannot take the federal settlement terms away.

  • →Third-party NIL deals of $600 or more must be reported through the NIL Go clearinghouse, generally within five business days, and are reviewed for fair market value
  • →Direct payments from a school count against that school's revenue-sharing cap; third-party deals do not
  • →The College Sports Commission handles enforcement tied to settlement rules; the NCAA still governs eligibility
  • →Every school also has its own NIL policy on disclosure, prohibited categories, and use of school marks, and it applies alongside state law
  • →Federal NIL legislation has been proposed repeatedly and remains unresolved

Major Sports Group

What this means for a Nevada athlete.

Las Vegas has become a major sports market, and Nevada high school football and basketball draw national attention. The NIAA opened the door in 2023, but described it as limited, which is why every Nevada deal starts with the regulation text.

MSG keeps Nevada deals within the approved categories and fully separate from the school, and confirms with the NIAA when a deal is unusual.
